Nicole Collins is an artist whose practice focuses on the effect of time, accumulation, force and heat on visceral materials, primarily through painting but also with installations, interventions, video, sound and multiples. Since 1994 she has shown in 10 solo exhibitions including The Embassy of Canada in Tokyo, and many group exhibitions in Toronto, New York, London, Zurich. Her work has been featured in magazines, newspapers and books including Time Out London, Canadian Art Magazine, Canadian House & Home, numerous reviews in The Globe & Mail, Roald Nasgaard's major survey Abstract Painting in Canada, Carte Blanche, Volume 2: Painting (2008), and The Donovan Collection Catalogue among many others. |
|
In her work Collins exploits the dynamic metaphorical possibilities of paint to communicate the fragility and resilience of life: physical, intellectual and spiritual. Her work has explored accumulation, excavation, deconstruction through carving, scraping, peeling and melting and reconstruction. In an essay on Collins' work artist and writer Ian Carr-Harris states: "To take apart, to put together, to die and to be free- these are powerful models by which to forge one's insertion into the cycle of existence. And it is this that Nicole Collins is intent on revealing". Collins is member-at-large on the newly inaugurated association, Colour Research Canada and is an award-winning and influential educator whose courses at the Ontario College of Art & Design University (OCADU) regularly generate wait-lists. She lives and works in Toronto with her husband artist Michael Davidson and their daughter. |
